Do What You're Doing

Do what you’re doing.

During an intense cardio/weight sweat session, one of our beloved fitness instructors uttered the words “do, what you’re doing.” At first I was like..umm what? Duh. Of course, I am doing what I am doing. What else would I be doing?

Want to know what else I was doing while working out? Checking my phone for any messages, looking at the playlist on my spotify app to make sure the right song was playing, filling up my water, looking around the room, and thinking of other things I could have been doing in that moment.

And there you have it; I was in fact NOT doing what I was doing. I was distracted, lost in thought and losing focus. This is a regular occurrence in my life. For example, I start cooking dinner, only to realize the trash needs to go out before the garbage truck comes by for pick up, then on my way out to the end of the road with my garbage can, I trip over a bicycle left in the driveway, so I start frantically picking up the yard. When I finally make it back into the house to finish dinner, the food is completely burned! And then you know what happens? The days fly by and I find myself lying in bed wondering where all of the time went. What did I even DO that day? I certainly was not doing what I was doing, or I would have remembered. What were my kids even doing? Did I even play with them? Perhaps time would have passed more slowly had I actually been present.

If you are reading this and finding that it resonates with you, that is because it happens to every single one of us. Our brains are hard wired to be distracted, to constantly scan the world around us ensuring our safety for survival purposes. Throw in some technology, kids, a job, and traffic and you have a full-blown recipe for distraction.

Want to know how to rewire that hard wiring? Recognize! Then recall this post and utter to yourself every morning “Do what you are doing”. It is a little experiment I will try with myself this next week.

I challenge you to try it with me! Let us know how it goes in the comments!
